Ahluwalia Menswear Spring 2022
"It can be used as a tool of resistance, of expressing yourself, and it creates family bonds and passes down craft from generation to generation. Growing up, everyone remembers having their hair braided on a Sunday before going to school." - rightly said by Priya Ahluwalia when talking to Vogue about the inspiration behind her Menswear Spring 2022 collection. Launching in collaboration with Mulberry, the 'Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design' awardee released her first womenswear line in the same.
Owing to her mixed British Nigerian-Indian heritage, Ahluwalia said she was inspired by the cultural importance of natural African and South Asian hair. She has paid homage to the same, remarkably through the braid-inspired patterns and an entire group of models of colour. She felt like she had an invisible responsibility to start a conversation about protecting one's natural hair and even created structural change at Mulberry by encouraging the implementation of the Halo Code.
The sustainably sourced collection can be viewed in all its glory in the designer's movie Parts of Me, a stunning, engaging portrayal of the same. In itself, the clothing is evocative yet calming, all while celebrating Ahluwalia's eclectic, unique style.
The illustrious patchwork denim, polo shirts, co-ord sets, and the deliberately feminine slip and shirt dresses and mini skirts perfectly tie in with her bold use of pattern-mixing and colour blocking. The crisp and intentional tailoring with the neutral colour palette shows that Ahluwalia knows how to play to her strengths. The minimal, all-natural make-up perfectly balanced the striking looped braids that the models donned, one with pearl-like beads.
It goes without saying that this is Priya Ahluwalia's strongest collection yet and that there is no stopping for this woman whose creativity doesn't even see the sky as a limit.
