MET Gala, 2021 - Best Dressed

The Met Gala, fashion’s grandest event, recognises the ingenuity that drives the fashion industry. Every Met Gala has a different theme, and 2021 honoured the creativity of American Fashion. While guests weren’t required to wear an item from a local label, their outfits had to represent America’s adventurous sense of style. This flexibility allowed for a variety of interpretations, making this year’s red carpet one of the most thrilling yet.

Some celebrities chose to pay respect to national idols- Billie Eilish, the co-chair, channelled her inner heroine in an Oscar de la Renta gown inspired by Marilyn Monroe’s sophisticated elegance.

Others relied on the element of surprise, such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who proved that “the medium is the message” by wearing a gorgeous white dress labelled “Tax the Rich” by Aurora James, in true American fashion style.

According to popular opinion, Pharrell Williams truly represented the theme by combining cowboys and Chanel. Pharrell donned a jet black cowboy shirt with white trim skinny trousers, which he complemented with a bolo tie and black cowboy boots.

Cara Delevingne’s outfit has a lot of people talking as well. The supermodel graced the red carpet in an all-white ensemble created by Dior’s Maria Grazia Chiuri; a vest with the phrase “Peg the Patriarchy” printed across the front. She kept the rest of her outfit simple- white cigarette pants and peep-toe heels so that all focus was on the lines inscribed over her torso.

While this year’s guest list caused a ton of controversy due to the inclusion of social media influencers, Emma Chamberlain handled herself with elegance. She sported a dazzling custom Louis Vuitton dress on the red carpet. The gleaming dress was studded with sequins and rhinestones, designed with triangular cuts and an asymmetric train. According to a statement by the brand, the dress has almost 2,300 rococo-style beads, 2,000 Swarovski crystals, 2,500 sequins, 21,000 microbeads, and 9,000 rhinestones. It took 290 hours to hand-embroider the dress.

While at the Gala, Hunter Schafer appeared to “slide into an alien alter-ego.” The outfit was a far cry from other interpretations of the evening’s theme, but her aesthetic inclination manifested itself in an Alien (the film)- era fashion moment: a two-piece silver ensemble from Prada’s 1999 Spring Collection.

While it might be difficult to stand out in a sea of celebrities wearing their most lavish odes to American design, Iman stole the show at the Met Gala. The legendary supermodel graced the red carpet in an otherworldly custom brocade bustier and pants, coupled with a tiered, golden feather cage overskirt and customised matching headdress designed by Dolce & Gabbana and British-American designer Harris Reed. Everything about

the outfit was red carpet gold, from the dramatic silhouette to the jaw-dropping accessories.

Conclusively, this year's Met Gala has truly set the bar for further years. While not everyone in attendance grasped the idea, everyone was dressed spectacularly.
