The Lighthouse (2019) by Robert Eggers

The roaring seas, blaring of the ship's horn and seagulls squawking initiates this film with an eerie background score and equally gloomy yet excellent cinematography. Within the first two minutes of the film, the viewers become pretty much aware of what they're in for.

Set around the late 1800s, two men arrive on an isolated lighthouse island to work their shift spanning about four weeks. Ephraim Winslow, played by Robert Pattinson, does all the heavy lifting work- whereas Thomas Wake, played by Willem Dafoe, is the older supervisor always bossing around Ephraim.

Director Robert Eggers loves to transport the audience to a couple of centuries back and begins his unique style of intense, horrific storytelling. Here we see how determined Ephraim is to carry out his duties, hoping to eventually man the lighthouse. But it is short-lived.

The extreme exhausting change the two men undergo is tremendously portrayed by the duo. The horrors of strange mythical creatures like mermaids and the Kraken continue haunting Ephraim, leading him to take extreme measures. All around the dark and lonely island, the only solace seems to be the light from the top of the lighthouse. We soon witness the two excessively intoxicated men starting a frenzied brawl as to who controls the lighthouse, driving them to complete insanity and self-destruction.

Eggers in his unique unsettling manner does justice to the horror genre in the most perfect way in terms of cinematic creativity.
